Blue-Green Algae: The Summer Water Risk to Know
Blue-green algae are not algae. They are cyanobacteria, and in warm, still, nutrient-loaded water some strains multiply into blooms that produce toxins dangerous to dogs in very small amounts. A bloom can look like spilled paint, pea soup, or a rim of green flecks shoved against the downwind shore. No one can identify a toxic bloom by eye. So the rule stays blunt: scummy water, no dog.
What are cyanobacteria, and why do dogs matter here?
Cyanobacteria are ancient single-celled organisms that photosynthesize like plants but behave like bacteria. They live in nearly every body of fresh water at low, harmless densities. Trouble starts when heat, sunlight, slow flow, and fertilizer or manure runoff line up, and the population explodes into a visible bloom.
Dogs get hit harder than people for reasons that have nothing to do with biology being unfair. They wade in the shallow, warm, downwind edge where scum concentrates. They drink while they swim. How do you plan a summer water day around bloom risk?
Start with the water body's official page. Most state environmental agencies and county health departments post advisories, and lake associations often update faster than the state does. Then plan for the possibility that the report is stale.
A workable routine:
- Check advisories the morning of, not the week before.
- Walk the downwind shoreline before you unclip anything.
- Bring enough drinking water that your dog has no reason to sample the lake.

Rinse thoroughly with clean water before your dog dries, paying attention to the chest, belly, and the feathering behind the legs where scum collects. Use a hose or a jug you carried in, not lake water. Keep her from licking while you work, then towel her down properly.
Wash your own hands and arms as well. The same toxins affect people, and children who help dry the dog are worth thinking about.
